The Benefits of a Fruit & Veg Box

Veg boxes in Edinburgh

Convenience

There is no waiting to weigh or pay for your items; simply select your preferred box, and we’ll drop it off at your doorstep. Get your order in before 5 pm, and you’ll enjoy it the next day.

Alternatively, select a date up to three days out for your convenience. We deliver between 10 am and 4 pm.

Try New Things

All of our food is organic, and each box contains essential ingredients and seasonal additions. Each week is a new adventure because the contents are slightly different.

You’ll find tasty new items to try, further improving the variety of calories that you consume.

Organic

We promote a chemical-free lifestyle and work with suppliers who do the same. The farmers in our network use organic farming methods.

The food is not only tastier but healthier, too. Conventional farmers drench their crops in pesticides that leach into the ground, resulting in the plants absorbing them and consumers ingesting them. There is nothing you can do can scrub out all of these chemicals.

Conventional farmers also use preservatives to keep the veggies fresh. Soaking produce in chlorine is a common practice today, ensuring that fruit and veggies last in the fridge for weeks, but it’s not healthy.

Organic fruit doesn’t look as perfect as its conventional counterparts, and it also won’t stay fresh as long. But organic produce reduces the chemical load on our bodies.

More Nutritious

Scientists cannot correctly duplicate all of the components in plant matter. While they can isolate specific vitamins, they cannot identify all of them.

No synthetic fertiliser is as good as organic plant matter. By feeding the soil, organic farmers ensure that their crops are healthy and work within the natural ecosystem to support their plants. The crops have access to higher-quality nutrition.

Fresh and Tasty

Farmers plant the seasonal crops best suited to the area and then leave these to ripen naturally.

The result is a product bursting with flavour. Since the farmers don’t use preservatives, it’s easy to gauge the age, as organic crops don’t last for weeks or months.

Eco-Friendly

At the supermarket, you typically weigh your fruit and veggies, meaning you bag them separately. Those little bags take their toll on the environment.

With Easter Greens, your order comes in a sturdy box you can reuse, return, or recycle.

Support for Locals

We prefer to source our veggies from Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, boosting the local economy and ensuring freshness.

If there are no local suppliers, we look for nearby sources. For example, there are no banana farms in Scotland, so we import that delicious fruit from an organic source.

Have Healthy Food on Hand

How often have you opened the fridge to find nothing healthy? Ordering our fruit & veg boxes online solves that problem. With multiple deliveries a week, you shouldn’t ever run out again.

Saves You Money

Buying the box helps you take advantage of bulk savings, and we even include little extras to improve the value of each box.

Shop Local

We source our goods locally as much as possible, minimising our environmental impact and providing better food. Our community supports us, so we like to return the favour.

The farmers win because they have ready access to a market for their items, and our customers score the freshest items at affordable prices.

Meat Alternatives, where to start?

There are so many reasons to go vegan and not everyone wants to give up that meaty texture and taste. So. Where do you start with meat alternatives?

Tofu

Tofu gets a bad reputation for having a weird texture and a bland taste but once you know how to prepare and use it, it's a very versatile meat alternative. High in protein and calcium its been used in Asia for over a thousand years.

Start with a seasoned and firmer tofu like Taifun Smoked Tofu. It's flavoursome and ready to use straight out the packet with minimal fuss. A great way to introduce tofu to your diet. I like to cut it into chunky cubes for a smokey addition to a spice spiked creamy laksa.

If you want to be a bit more adventurous try Clearspot Original Tofu. It comes unflavoured so you can season it however you like to substitute chicken and seafood in recipes.

Tempeh

Once you've mastered tofu why not try tempeh?

Tofu is made from soymilk however tempeh is made using the whole fermented soybeans. It’s packed with protein, fiber, calcium, and vitamins and has a nutty flavour before you even start with the seasonings.

Simply slice it, dice it, or mince it up in a food processor and you are ready to go. Personally I like to slice season it to make tempeh bacon for a reuben or BLT or crumble it and cook it with garam masala and peas for a vegan keema curry.

Seitan

Seitan is the closest to meat texture for most people however if you are gluten free or celiac this is sadly not for you.

There are lots of different ways of making this which makes it an extremely versatile meat alternative. Additions and flavours can be added to the mix to give you a more chicken like taste or beef or pork.

In store you'll find a few different seitan based produces such as Sgaia's streaky bacon, Faceplant Foods Square-Go lore sausage and even tins of seitan based mock duck. You'll even find all the ingredients your need to try making your own in store and online. yum!

Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)

TVP was one of the very first things I used as a meat alternative. It's dehydrated soy which comes in lots of different shapes and sizes but the most useful (I find) is the TVP mince.

Re-hydrate it in a flavourful stock or directly into your sauce or stew and it will soak up all those delicious flavours while adding a bit of texture to your dish. Think of it as minced beef or pork, so perfect for Shepherd's pie, burgers and meatloaves.

Jackfruit

Jackfruit has become quite well known and popular over the last couple of years, and for good reason as it's an excellent meat alternative.

Jackfruit is a large spiky tropical fruit, but in its unripe state its texture matches pulled pork. Flavour wise it's mildly fruity on its own making it a blank canvas for seasoning and flavour. I like to use it instead of shredded chicken in a korma, as a substitute for carnitas in tacos or smothered in BBQ sauce for a good old pulled pork sandwich.

------

This just scratches the surface of meat free alternatives for people wanting to cut down on meat and try some simple swaps. There is also a whole range of mushrooms, lentils, beans and vegetables that can be used to make delicious and satisfying meat alternatives. There is something for everyone wanting to try veganism.

Lockdown update

As everyone is aware we're now in a fresh lockdown for at least the next three weeks. Last time we were in lockdown this meant barricading the door at Easter Road and offering a over the counter service to keep all our lovely customers in fresh food throughout the months the followed.

This time things will be a lot more normal.

* Our opening hours remain the same, both of our stores will be open 7 days a week

* We'll be limiting the amount of customers we have in store to give you an extra bit of breathing room while you shop. At the moment its 1 household at a time in Easter Road and 3 households at a time in Morningside.

* Click and collect is available at both Easter Road and Morningside so you can choose your shopping in advance and minimise contact by just popping in to pick up your goodies. Avoid the queue too by using the handy doorbell outside the shop so we can bring your shopping out to you.

* Don't forget delivery! Are you self isolating? or just don't want to go out? Let us delivery the groceries directly to your door.

Thank you so much to everyone for the support you've given us this difficult year, we look forward to bringing you new and exciting 100% plant based groceries to brighten your 2021.

Fruity Fig and Walnut Loaf

Tis the season of the fruit cake, but not all fruit cakes need to take weeks and weeks to make.

This is a quick and easy fruit cake based on the Dutch apple/ginger cake you'll find ready-made in store combined with the British staple malt loaf. Filled with plump tea soaked figs and crunchy walnuts, you'll find everything you need to make this both in store and online at EasterGreens.co.uk.

Delicious any time of the day, I've been enjoying a slice for a quick breakfast with a generous layer of spread. Yum!

Fruity Fig and Walnut Loaf

Ingredients -
120g White Rye Flour
120g All Purpose Flour
3 tsp Baking Powder
1 tbsp Ground Cinnamon
100g Raw Cane Sugar

100g Barley Malt
250g Dried Figs
100g Walnuts
300ml Boiling Water
1 Black Tea Bag
Pinch of salt

Method -
1. Start by making tea with the boiling water and teabag. Add in the figs and leave them to soak until soft and plump.

2. Preheat your oven to 200c and line a loaf tin with baking paper.

3. Drain the figs and retain the tea, you’ll use this in the cake. Roughly chop the figs.

4. Sift together all of your dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Add in the figs and walnuts then toss to coat.

5. Add in the liquid malt and the leftover tea from soaking the figs. Mix well until there are no dry pockets and you have a thick batter.

6. Pour the batter into your prepared loaf tin and bake at 200c for 25 minutes. Next turn the oven off but leave the loaf in the oven to continue cooking.

7. Once cooled, slice and enjoy with a hearty layer of Naturli.

Give it a try and let us know what you think. Don't forget to tag us on Instagram or Facebook with pictures of your creation.

Vegan turky roasts available now!

Easter Greens has teamed up with Faceplant Foods this December to bring you a 100% plant based turky roast for the festivities!

First of all let's talk about Faceplant foods. They are a Scottish pop up plant based kitchen who you would normally find at markets serving their incredible plant based cheeze toasties. Due to COVID though we've not had many events and markets this year so we're now bringing you their delicious products in store instead.

Right now you'll find their Square-Go lorne sausage alternative, Plantsrami and Maple Smoked Bacon in both our Easter Road and Morningside stores.

Now let's talk about these festive roasts which are available in two sizes -

The whole (1.1kg) roast feeds 6-8 people and the half (550g) roast feeds 3-4 people.

We're really excited to be bringing this to our customers this year, who says being vegan means you have to give up delicious festive roasts?

Welcome to Easter Greens - Untitled Oats!

We're very happy to be welcoming Untitled Oats to both our Easter Road and Morningside store.

They are a local small business making oat milk from Scottish oats, water and just 4 other ingredients. In an effort to be as sustainable as possible Untitled Oats comes in a re-useable glass bottle which can be returned to be refilled.

Deliveries are even made in a zero emission eCargo bike!

How does it fare compared to tried and tested oat milks like Oatly, Minor Figures or Glebe Farm? Well its a barista style milk with the addition of rapeseed oil in their recipe which means it foams for hot drinks. Taste wise though it's delicious! One of the very few dairy free milks that can be drunk straight from the bottle with a distinctly oaty taste but is also equally tasty in a tea, coffee or hot chocolate.

Have you tried Untitled Oats yet? What did you think? Tag us in your pictures on social media and give us a review.

Ask Ivy - Dukkah

Hi, my name is Ivy and I am a very very enthusiastic cook.

I'm known for my knowledge of ingredients and how to use them as well as scribbling recipes on post-it notes for customers who come in looking for inspiration and help.

Today I'm going to share with you one of those in store conversations - Dukkah.

Do we stock it ready made? No. However it is really easy to make and the beauty of making your own is that you can customise it to your taste (and what you have in the cupboard).

Let's roll back a little first. What is Dukkah? Duqqa, du'ah, do'a, or dukkah is an Egyptian and Middle Eastern condiment consisting of a mixture of herbs, nuts, and spices. It is typically mixed with olive oil for use as a dip with bread but it's delicious sprinkled over roasted vegetables such as the seasonal winter squash.

Delicious right?

Traditional dukkah recipes vary but they have some base ingredients that are essential -

* Sesame seeds
* Cumin
* Coriander Seed

Past this you can experiment with the other ingredients of the recipe to make it your own. To get you going here is my hazelnut dukkah recipe -

1/3 cup Hazelnuts
4 tbsp Coriander Seeds

3 tbsp Sesame Seeds
2 tbsp Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Fennel Seeds
1 tsp Black Peppercorns
1 tsp Dried Mint
1 tsp Sea Salt

To make dukkah is really simple from here. In a hot dry pan toast all of your ingredients until fragrant. Tip everything into a mortar and pestle and grind to your preferred consistency. I like mine a bit chunky but other people might like it like a fine spice powder. Cool the mix and store in an airtight jar. It keeps for ages so it's worthwhile making a larger batch so that it's to hand for those quick and easy work night meals.

Don't have hazelnuts? Try it with almonds or peanuts. Don't like fennel seed? Add a bit more coriander and cumin, Experiment and see what you like and let us know what you think!

Do you have a cooking question? Send me an email at Ivy@eastergreens.co.uk!

Hello Morningside!

It’s been an exciting week over in Morningside with the opening of Easter Greens number 2.

With almost double the shelf space of Easter Road we’ve had a lot of fun picking new and exciting items to fill the shop. The only problem we have is not buying it all ourselves, but that is a good problem to have!

We had a couple of hiccups on opening day, mainly - our fridges and freezers didn’t arrive in time. We decided not to delay opening while we waited for them as there was so much more in store to share with our lovely customers, plus it means we have the opportunity to celebrate twice. Once when the shop opening it's doors for the first time and again when we brought in all the chilled and frozen goodies.

So what extra do we have in shop 2? We've got a whole extra fridge which means three fridges in total. One dedicated entirely to dairy free cheeses, including locally made Earthy Vegan Cheese. A second fridge dedicated to meat alternatives like tofu, seitan and tempeh alongside faux meats like sausages, steaks and the very popular Sgaia streaky bacon.

Fridge three has some delicious ready to eat foods. Here you'll find another local favorite - Planet Kuku alongside fresh soup, stuffed pasta and all your favorite Delphi houmous from Easter Road with the addition of avocado houmous and smokey lentil houmous.

Last but not least we're really excited to introduce a freezer section to Easter Greens. We went a little bit over the top and ordered a bit more than we can fit in there, but there were just too many tasty tubs of ice cream to choose from. Maybe your more of a savory person? Why not try a One Planet Pizza instead?

If you haven't already, come by our new shop and say hello. We've got more goodies than I can list in this simple blog post so come have a look around.
